Weekly rehearsal log for Rock Of Ages #3

MON 25TH

In todays lesson, we started by going through everything that we had learnt and done so far from scenes to songs. In this run through some areas of issue were stated and dealt with so that it could run smoothly in future run throughs. Along with this we also added in some choreography for the ensemble for we built this city that we could do in the background of the number to add some levels and involvement for the ensemble. For me, I was part of the ensemble and felt that although the choreography was simple, it was very effective for the number.

TUE 26TH

In todays rehearsal, it was a smaller one held after school for only an hour. However, we were able to get through a whole number during this. The scene that we did today was for heaven, and this heavily involved my character, Waitress #2 (Maria). During this rehearsal I felt that I could have used the time a little more effectively and focused a bit more than I did. But with what we got done in the rehearsal, I felt the quality of work we all created together was strong and effective for this scene. Also, as this was one of my first proper rehearsals as my character, It helped me massively get into character and add some characterisation.

WED 27TH

When it comes to todays lesson this was the first singing rehearsal back with Lois as she was back from her Jury duty, so this rehearsal started off mainly as a refresh rehearsal. After we had gone through and refreshed the songs in our heads and re worked on harmonies that got lost over time, we worked on the final song of act one. In this song I was moved from the alto singing group and moved to the soprano group, which I then stayed in for a few more songs. Overall, todays rehearsal went well as we were able to make sure all the songs we had done so far were polished and up to the highest standard.

THU 28TH

At the start of today we ran through the show so far and what we had completed, cleaning up little sections along the way. And during this we also filled in some smaller scene and piece things together. After this was then a smaller rehearsal in which me and a couple other people of the cast put together a new scene that then lead into dead or alive. This scene really helped me with characterisation when it came to my role as my teacher gave me and the others more pointers on how to act/ present ourselves. Then at the end of the day, we did a final run through of act one where our teachers gave us notes and looked at sections of the show so far that needed changing or cleaning up. So by the end of the rehearsal some numbers ran smoother and cleaner than they did before. As today was a long day of rehearsals I felt that near the end of the day I was lacking energy and that I should have put more focus and effort into it.

FRI 29TH

Unfortunately I have started to come down with the cold that seems to have spread around the class which meant I was unable to come to this short singing rehearsal, However I looked back on the videos sent of the rehearsal so I could get a grasp of what was done in that day. In that rehearsal they went over a bunch of songs and finished of cleanly the act one finale song. Due to not being there that day, I went over some of the songs in my spare time and listened to them so I could keep them fresh in my brain.

SMART TARGET + IMPROVEMNET REVIEW

When it comes to this week I have felt that my confidence is continuing to improve as I am able to perform not only as an ensemble but also my character with confidence. However, there are time where I find that my confidence drops, and this is in areas where I am slightly un sure of what I am doing and when. So I feel to improve my overall confidence, I need to take more time to practice the choreography of the show.

When it comes to my vocal range, this has improved quite a bit aided by the exercises and vocal warmups that we have been doing in class and before rehearsals. I can tell that this skill is improving as I can feel that my voice is less strained on higher notes in the songs of the show.

An extra skill I have seen an improvement on is my accent. My accent has improved masses and I feel a lot more confident in my ability to perform not only in the rock style, but also in the accent of an American.
