Conventions of Musical theatre

Rock of ages is a 2005 Juke-Box musical that is composed off a range of 80's hair metal, this being the shows selling point. The show itself musically is quite unique due to its Rock style. The musical featured Power Ballads, Every Rose + I wanna know what love is, and songs that challenged the vocalists through vocal harshest like falsetto and head/chest voice. One this that this musical did quite uniquely was the way that both the male and female singers had their songs set in quite a higher vocal range, meaning that casting the roles required the singers to be able to adapt to the vocal qualities of this musical. Along with this, unlike any musical, Rock of Ages is a mainly soloisitic show with little to few harmonies and group songs, which meant that vocally the ensemble did not have as much vocal opportunities during the show unlike other musicals. To fit with the overall style of Rock, This challenged me and others to make sure that we were accommodating vocally for this, th...

MON 13 Today was our second and final tech run for the show, and this was mainly used to fine tune the lighting so it matched our directors vision and also balance the volume of the band in contrast with the singing and dialogue. This rehearsal was very much for the band and the tech team more than it was for us as a cast, but despite this it was still a very helpful run of the show. This was as by having a run that was quite chill for us gave us time to make sure we were certain of the run of the show and new notes and staging that had been changed compared to how it had been before we put it on the new stage. For me, this rehearsal was very successful as I was able to figure out when and where I would be looking if I needed to hold a freeze frame, lock in my new positions in numbers that I was in and figure out when and where I needed to be in the wings during the show. TUE 14 Today was our first dress run of the show along with our first public performance, this being a dress rehear...

TUE 7 In todays lesson, it was quite a long day, In which we ran through the whole show, act 1 and act 2. For me this was a very helpful rehearsal as it allowed me to lock into my brain the choreography on the show and help me identify the couple of areas where I did the wrong leg or arm. Along with this it gave me more time to consider my character and how I wanted to act in areas of the show that I had to fill looking like I was doing my job as a waitress. For me this it consisted of my cleaning glasses and chairs. Along with this, during this run it also helped me discover where and when I need to move set pieces like chairs so that they were ready for the number and I had to make sure to do this in a natural way. In conclusion, after todays rehearsal, even though it was successful overall, It let me know where and what I needed to work on. WED 8 When it came to todays rehearsal we spent sometime going over the singing and the staging of the whole show. This rehearsal was helpful as...

MON 30TH In todays rehearsal we did a full run through of the show, this included act 1 + act 2. For me this rehearsal was very helpful not only so that I could get notes on my performance but also so that I could make sure that I knew what I was doing and when as the order of the show was still quite loose in my head. For me I felt that I performed to a high quality but there was definitely areas where I could tell my performance was weak due to not being sure what I was doing. For me, One of my very weak areas in the show was I wanna rock as I was very unsure what the movements and timing are for this number, so I plan to go back over this with my fellow cast mates. However, this rehearsal was very successful and helped me highlight any grey areas in my memory.  TUE 31ST Unfortunately I was off ill for this rehearsal due to not being in the best health that day. However, I made sure to spend some of the time I was off to watch back old videos from our rehearsal process so that I ...

MON 16TH In todays rehearsal, we started the day re-going over Don't stop believing and making sure that we all knew our places in the choreography along with making sure that everyone knew and could execute the choreography smoothly and in time. For me this rehearsal was very helpful in helping me remember and learn all the movements and words of the song. Along with this we also went over some scene in which we cleaned up the staging along with making sure scene from scene flowed neatly into each other. WED 18TH In todays lesson we went over the songs from the shows, this meant making sure that harmonies were clean and clear. For me, I wasn't feel the best that day so I did as much as I could when it came to doing the movements for the songs. For me this rehearsal really allowed me to focus on the singing aspects of the numbers while also memorising the movements of the songs. Personally, In this rehearsal I discovered a range of harmonies that were a lot weaker than others, ...

MON 9TH When it comes to todays rehearsal we worked on the number, Don't stop believing. This number is the final number of the show. We started off by singing through the number for a bit and then we went straight into the choreography. The choreography itself is quite simple having simple moves happening on certain lines/ words of the song. Personally I felt that todays rehearsal went quite well as we were able to complete a whole number within our rehearsal time. TUE 10TH Today we had a shorter after college rehearsal in which we went over the whole of act one and ran it through. For it being our first run through, I felt that it went quite well overall as we where able to flow each scene into each other and made it run for the amount of time it needed to. For me, doing this run helped me highlight areas where I knew I needed to re-cap dance sections or dialogue. Along with this, I discovered that I needed to get a more clear idea of the running order of the show so that it easi...
